UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES ALUMNI ASSOCIATION IN AMERICA GRANTS OUTSTANDING PROFESSIONAL IN LAW AWARD TO ROMAN P. MOSQUEDA

 

            On August 23, 2005, Delia Hidalgo-Rayos of Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan, Co-Chairperson of the Outstanding Alumni Awards Committee of the University of the Philippines Alumni Association in America (UPAAA), announced that Los Angeles Attorney Roman P. Mosqueda has been chosen as the Outstanding Professional In Law awardee.

             The UPAAA is the nationwide association of alumni of the University of the Philippines, with members all over the United States.  It will hold its 2005 General Assembly and Convention on October 7 to 9, 2005, in San Diego, more particularly at the Towne and Country Resort & Convention  Center in Mission Valley, California.

             The Outstanding Alumni Awards shall be presented during the Gala Night of the 2005 General Assembly & Convention, being hosted by UPAAA San Diego, on Saturday, October 8, 2005.  The theme of the convention is “Upholding the UP Spirit.”

             The recipient of this biennial Convention’s Outstanding Professional in Law award is Dr. Roman P. Mosqueda, a 1968 Bachelor of Laws  cum laude graduate, at the top of his evening law class, and a holder of Master of Laws (LL.M.) and Doctor of the Science of law (S.J.D.) degrees in record time from The University of Michigan Law School.

             He has authored and published two law books: “Marriage And Its Dissolution Handbook” (700 pages) and “Philippine Law and Jurisprudence On Products Liability: A Comparative Study” (500 pages), and numerous legal articles in newspapers in California.

             He was featured in the February 21, 2003 Los Angeles Times article on “Convicted Cambodians Fear Deportation,” as the immigration attorney of Chanphirun Meanowuth Min, the nephew of Lon Nol, who was in removal proceedings in the Los Angeles Immigration Court, and for whom he successfully obtained final withholding of removal.

             Coincidentally, Dr. Mosqueda was also the recipient of the 2004 Outstanding Professional Award In Law of the University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Greater Los Angeles.  He has also received the Pamana Award USA 2004 for Outstanding  Businessman of the Year and Outstanding Attorney of the Year.  And he got the prestigious 2004 Ronald Reagan Republican Gold Medal Award.

             A pro bono arbitrator trained by the California State Bar, he has also done pro bono work for Filipino World War II veterans and crewmen.  He was featured by CNN News and Los Angeles ABC Channel 7 local news on December 27, 2004, as the attorney of Filipino seamen, intending to sue the U.S. Government and the shipping owner/operator of M/V Katerina.

             Dr. Mosqueda was notified by his membership in the Million Dollar Advocates Forum, because of a final judgment of $1.160 million entered on February 2, 2004, which he obtained in an immigration, real-estate investment case in the Orange County Superior Court in Santa Ana, California.

             Also a real estate broker and real estate attorney, he was former President of the Ateneo de Manila University Student Council, when Joey Leviste was the secretary, and now Senator Richard Gordon the treasurer. He was graduated magna cum laude in B.S. Economics from the Ateneo de Manila University.

             He was elected University Councilor of the University of the Philippines Student Council, when Loida Nicolas-Lewis, now President of NaFFAA, was also a University Councilor thereof.  A U.P. High School (Iloilo College), valedictorian graduate, he is both a high school and law school alumnus, accumulating eight years of being a U.P. student.
